W ith Ihe low price of but terfat, many dairymen are finding It difficult to buy feedstuff« which are maintaining a fairly high price level. Also, there Is a slow demand for milk cows, and beef prices are very low. The situation Is more difficult in the W illamette valley where practically all If last year's oats and vetch huy crop was des troyed by winter freexing. Should Cull Herd It Is certainly logical for every dairyman to cull his herd closely at the present time rather than purchaae feed for them. Old cows, poor producers and unhealthy ani mals such as abortion reactors, d if ficult bre ders. and animals with udder disorders may well be dis posed of. Similarly, young heifers may be culled and only the choic est ones retained. It would be much more desirable to cull out one fourth or even one-half of the herd and to feed thr-eo remaining some what better, than to attempt to maintain all the herd If the feed supply Is limited. The roost economical ration to feed depends directly on tbe feed I staffs available on tbe p articu lar1 farm, say the dairy specialists. A good quality of legume hay meets Ihe requlrement-i of growing heif ers fairly well. If only grass or a ' cereal hay. such as at hay. Is avail able, then It would be economical to supplement the ration of a grow ing yearling heifer with three quar ters to one pound daily of a high protein concentrate such as peanut meal. It would cost about 32 to feed a protein supplement to a growing heifer until pastures should be available. The expendl ture Is Justified If tbe animal is to be retained as a future dairy herd replacement. Many Attend Lodge Meet— About 36 members of Pine Circle. Neigh Father Is III— M r and Mra.
